21st c. Luthiers from Europe click for more
In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.
With a workshop in rural Britanny, France, in addition to running the online, (and sometimes real), music shop Justecordes.fr he makes Soprano Ukuleles, (though he will make other sizes in asked), and a number of other instruments. He started out in the 1990s building Guitars, (in his dad's cabinet makers workshop), but became more interested in alternative folk instruments. In addition to building Banjos and Banjoleles, (it is only the Banjos that are branded Moon on a Stick), and Ukuleles, he is making nylon strung 4 string Mandolins (a Ukulele/Mandolin hybrid tuned in fifths that thankfully he has resisted the urge to call Mandoleles)
From Bournemouth in the UK, he specialises in making archtop stringed instrument including Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone, (though Baritones are not mentioned on the website), scale archtop Ukuleles, (often with custom made hard cases too!) that he calls the Jazz Box range. He also teaches the art of making archtop instruments.
