In being on the lookout for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

Niall Kavanagh - Kingstown Ukes

Based in Dublin, Ireland He was a Piano and Antique restorer for 25 years before taking up luthiery in 2011 under the name of N.J.K Custom Guitars. He has now changed the branding to Kingstown Ukes and concentrated solely on Ukuleles where he makes all scales, and archtop as well as flat top Ukuleles.

Mylène de Baudouin

In business since before 2013, she started out attending the national School of Lutherie in Mirecourt, France and after graduation she stayed there to set up a workshop in conjunction with Philippe Moneret. She has since moved on to her own workshop at Ornon near Grenoble where she makes all manner of chordophone including Guitars, Mandolins, Violins, (including a glass bodied Cello!) and Ukuleles. On her price lists she quotes for Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone models but I have only see large Concert, (405mm) scale Ukuleles made by her in the "Selmer Gipsy Guitar" style with a large D, (grande bouche), soundhole. On the price list page it also says she will do the small oval, (petite bouche), designs as well. Her catalogue also includes a small Tenor Guitar she calls "Little Miss" (La p'tite), and with a 540mm, (21¼ inch), scale it's closer to a large Baritone than a Tenor Guitar.

Tom Ziegenspeck

Originally from Leipzig, Germany he went on to get a master’s degree from the University of musical instrument making in Markneukirchen in July 2015, (though he had been making instruments for some time before that , certainly starting before 2013), he has now moved to North Wales where he works closely with Pete Howlett. Though he has made other chordophones in the past his main focus is Ukuleles with him making acoustic Tenors and electric Concerts as the bulk of his catalogue. he does include a Harp Ukulele as an option too.
