In being on the look out for nice Ukuleles I see the work of a number of full and part time luthiers. The instruments they make look very nice and worthy of note.

David Gomes

From Kohala, Hawaii, he has been making instruments since 1975 having studied classical and flamenco Guitar in Spain. As well as making Guitars he makes all scales of Ukulele, including Bass Ukuleles, Lili'u and Taropatches. He is fond of inlay work too and most of his Ukuleles have a signature notch in the top of the headstock.

Dennis Lake - Po Mahina

Based in Na'alehu on the Big Island, he has been making and repairing Guitars and Ukuleles since 1969 and is authorised to do repairs for Martin Guitars. His Ukulele catalogue includes all scales from Soprano to Baritone plus Pineapple, Lili'u and Taropatch Ukuleles and Guitaleles. He has a couple of interestingly different Designs too, one is he makes Selmer style Tenors and Baritones with D hole or Oval sound holes he calls his "Island Jazz" models and the other is a Hawaiian Tenor Guitar/Giant Baritone, (and he sells it as a large body 23 inch scale Baritone too), he calls the "Buddy Fo Special" - and he likes to make a few Cigar Box Concerts too. As well as his own workshop he is also the house luthier for Hilo Guitars a big Hilo Ukulele shop and teaches Ukulele building at Keaola Beamer's Aloha Music Camp.

I have no information on this luthier beyond he comes from Hawaii and his middle name is Emmett. However as this picture crops up in a lot of places, including Wikipedia, to illustrate Harp Ukuleles I thought I had better reference him in the database to show that I have seen his existence. If anyone has any proper details of him please let me know.
